Hesitation Issue - Possible Fix? (spring stretch)

I'm not having this issue but I know a lot of 4th and 5th genners have hesitation issues. I remember how much of a bish it was to have this issue when I had my '99...and buying new coils at $55-75 was the only fix. This possible fix is something I happened to come across looking for something else.

The mod itself seems to be a popular thing amongst the MazdaSpeed 3 & 6 community. Under WOT, they will sometimes experience a hesitation/stutter issue. One thing they suggested to try was to take out each coil pack and stretch the spring inside a little. It was noted that the spring doesn't come into complete contact with the spark plug, sometimes a 4mm gap. By stretching the spring, a better contact can be made between the coil pack and spark plug.

Ignition Coil Spring Stretch Mod How-To (w/pics)

Is this something Maxima owners could do to help hesitation/stutter under WOT? Do the Maxima coil packs come apart as the Mazda coils do?

I don't know, it's something free to try if anyone wants to try it out on their own. Again I don't have the issue on my 5.5 at all but maybe it could help someone.

-Jeff

(I posted this same thread in the 5th gen forum but decided there probably aren't a ton of 4th genners that go in there regularly)

I still believe that humidity/moisture may play a part in the coil pack failure on VQ30s but the spring stretch mod was interesting.

i dont see why not. Maybe there isnt anythin actually wrong with teh coil. Maybe the spring over time starts to recede into the coil and all u have to do is stretch the spring in order to get it working again. Sounds like a good idea to try before dropping $50 on a coil.

Is there anyone with a spare busted coil who can try out the theory and report back??

I know you can test coils to see if the ohms are correct...but I know I have seen posts where users report the coils tested ok but were still misfiring.

I'd love it if this mod could possibly save some .Orgers money.

The springs are tight, but keep your eye open for corrosion on the coil pack where the spring contact is made. That has been the cause of misfires and it's an easy fix. Just clean up the contact area with some emery cloth. Use a screwdriver to get in there. Make sure there is no corrosion on the spring either.

Useful thread. I have a buddy who owns the 09 spd3. I'll probably share this with him, doubt he will consider this but dunno. He's a pay full price to fix issue/warranty/go to dealer kinda guy

So essentially, moisture is probably the main problem for coil pack issues...?

Well oddly enough, I found an old coil pack from my '99 in my garage. Along with an old knock sensor.

I'll test the ohms to see if they still 'read' good but if anyone in/near Dallas wants to test this out and has a misfire let me know.
