OBD port disconnecting at smog

So my 97 Max failed smog 2 times in 2 days because the smog place's device disconnects from the OBD port in the middle of the test. Handheld devices work just fine.
Aside from cleaning the battery...

By coincidence, on 9/7 I was at a junkyard trying to find a steel wheel with minimal runout. Probably because of the heat and smoke, I came out with no wheel, but with 2 of the triangular brackets....
