It could, but you would need, or at least it would be prudent, to wire in an on/off switch so that it is only on at night when you need it so it doesn't drain the battery.

Yes, using regular may cause knock, but using regular also doesn't mean that it is going to knock. Lower octane doesn't mean that it is poor gas, just like higher octane doesn't mean that it is good...

Mine is by passed with a resistor and doesn't knock. The knock sensor doesn't keep the engine from knocking, it detects knock, and then the ecu retards timing to stop it.

Because it doesn't retard the timing unless it detects a reason to retard it. If it's not causing knocking, and the A/F/emissions are fine it isn't going to just retard it because it's lower octane.

The engine doesn't know what octane gas you put in, it relies on the knock sensor, and other sensors, to detect detonation, and emissions to maintain air/fuel mixtures, and add/take away fuel, retard...

I think I found the problem, or at least the first problem. On the I30 the Lighting Switch is plug E111, on the Maxima it is plug E108. Got to do some more tracing, and comparing, and will update...
