Heated seats

Hey all here is an update...

I put a new window regulator and motor in my driver side door, now the window works beautifully
I went to the junk yard today and picked up a couple of heated seat switches and their wires. I still need to find heated seats in good condition. I picked up Add-A-Circuit connectors to wire them up. I am going off a tutorial posted by The Wizard on here. https://maxima.org/forums/4th-genera...t-install.html.

These switches are out of a 96 I30 that was full of cigarette ash. With some rubbing alcohol they cleaned up nicely

Washer Contianer with fluid level sensor

Hey all,
I picked up a windshield washer tank today at the junkyard. It has the fluid level indicator on it. I still need to install it but that's the easy part. My car doesnt have this sensor so I wanted to add it because I could and the part was dirt cheap with a sale.

Radio downgrade/upgrade.

Updating this form after a few long months of not working on the car. But hey I went to the junkyard today to look at a 98 Maxima and found this Kenwood DPX-400. From what I have seen it is a decent little unit. I have know idea if it works but I am going to throw it in tonight and try. My current radio is a kenwood so it should just plug in.

I like the period correct look of this radio but It doesn't have blutooth (of course) and I use that a lot now. I don't know but I may keep it or sell it what do you all think

Cassette I believe, they do have a Mini disc version of this model though!
Unfortunately I couldn't test it last night because my newer Kenwood uses a different harness so I am going back to the yard on Sunday to grab the harness from that Maxima and maybe the speakers if they are in good shape

Radio Update...

Got the DPX-400 working and it sounds great. Even better that the newer Kenwood I had installed...
I had issues getting the sound to play but then realized I forgot to solder the amp wire oops...
Well anyway I am going to keep it because it fits the look I am going with. I can live without bluetooth and just use a cassette adapter and my cds.

The dimmer and power antenna now function unlike the other radio. I am very happy with that.

I am still planning on getting speakers and a small sub ( dont want too much bass). The Bose speakers are fine but I want something different and new.

The woes of the P1447 CEL

Hey all,
I have been recently struggling with the P1447 code (matter of time I guess). Well anyway I am going to delve deep into it. I noticed that the Engine bay smells like exhaust so that leads me to EGR or evap hoses. On my Maxima it was the EGR tube being clogged so I could start there. I need to do the real valve cover anyway. I am currently getting garbage gas mileage as of late.

Checked hoses there is no obvious cracks or tears. Also started to develop a oil leak in the rear of engine and the side near the alternator. As well as a possible rear main leak. All this after putting nearly 7k on the car sense September.

I fixed the p01447 code by replacing the evap values and hoses on the IM. Put 400 miles on the car since and no CEL and great gas millage again. Now I need to address the muffler and the oil leaks, my catback is hanging down and scraps on bumps because the rubber bushing holder things failed. The muffler has several holes from East coast salt from about 18 years ago when the original owners had the car

How did you get the cluster to come out? I fought with mine for a good 20 minutes and gave up to not break it. I couldn't get the clips behind the steering column to pop out.

I ran along the edge of the trim with a trim tool to break the first one free then with a hard yank I pulled the rest out. You need to do it straight or the clips will break. I learned that the hard way. Mine cracked but it’s not noticeable just be careful but some force is required for the bottom clips if I remember.

Went to the yards today. Unfortunately my quest for a bumper and fender alluded my once again. Both cars were the wrong color so I decided not to grab them right now although one does have the spoiler but the rest of the trunk is damaged.

anyway I finally found the I30 front and rear mud flaps. Although I couldn’t get the passenger side because it was missing. But I got the rear ones and that’s what I was looking for. The car looks pretty neat with them on.

I also grabbed a new AAC unit to see if I can get the illumination to work. As well as new blinker housings because my ones had no rubber around them anymore. That is an I30 specific fit part different from the maxima so they are hard to come by

Alright guys this here is an update.

1. I put the AAC buttons in and one light came on and then went out. It’s either a bad connection to the illumination wire or bad bulbs. Need to go in with a tester and see if there is continuity. The AC and heat work fine but it would be nice to get the illumination working.

2. I am going to check the junkyards this weekend for parts. I still need to find a fender and bumpers. More damage to the bumper I caused by hitting a stupid pole at a coffee shop. Doesn’t matter because a tow truck already messed it up.

3. Starting to get a droning hum at highway speeds. Noticed on a drive up to Olympia. This car has its original bearings. So if it gets worse I am going to replace them. Could be somethings else who knows.

4. I need to get that sheared bolt out of the trans pan mounting surface. The RTV I put there is failing and now the fluid is leaking. Plus I need to get in there and figure out some shifting issues. I replaced the shift solenoids and valve body after I hit a curb. I replaced it with parts from a 95 Maxima and I have read that these can have issues. So I am going to get a 1997 or newer.

That’s all for now. I am in talks with a few body shops to fix the hole on the rocker. Most places don’t even want to touch the car even though I am going to pay for the repair. I want it fixed because water gets in there and sits which is not good. Oh and it looks bad but that’s the lesser concern.

EVAP p1447 and annoying trouble codes

Its been a while...
I decided to finally tackle this problem after getting sub par gas millage. As I stated before I had the P1447 code which involves thew EVAP system.

before yesterday I only replaced and cleaned the parts on the top of the engine, which temporarily fixed the issue but the main issue was a full canister at the rear. It was sending trash through the system and clogging the purge valves causing a CEL. So I ripped it all out and I'm in the process of cleaning all of it and replacing the canister.

In the process i broke the vapor valve twice. Its very brittle so if you need to do this BE CAREFUL!!!! this part is about $100 new. I cut mine off a car at the wrecker yard saving about $95 dollars.

I will be putting it back together and updating later

These old plastic barbs are really brittle after 24 years so be careful

Future Plans...

I am able to start working on the car again, it has been a long time because of pain from work and my disability (have Cerebral Palsy). Those things combined made it really difficult to do any work on my car. So I began to let her waste away ignoring maintenance and body work. Anyway things are getting better and I have really wanted to jump back in and finish this car.

I now sit at 193K on the clock, starting to have transmission issues again and if you know my history with this car that is nothing new. The auto is shifting hard after leaving a stop light. (Feel like getting hit in the rear sometimes its that bad)

I have a few options to address this transmission.
1. Replace the valve body in the auto trans again, (basically putting a bandage on the failing transmission)
2. replace the auto with an auto (this would be easiest, but be boring and the quality and life of a junkyard trans is questionable
3. Do a 5 speed swap ( relatively easy, would need to scour for parts, but it would make the car more enjoyable and is the route I would like to go if I can)

The Exhaust...
So, my exhaust after the cat is hanging down leaking and rusty. I need to remove it and replace it, it's making a lot of noise and is unsightly. Most of the Maxima's at the yards have bad mufflers as well.

Thats it for now

I recently converted my I30 from a 5 speed to a 6 speed, so I have a ton of MT parts available (transmissions, clutch/flywheel, shifter rods, mounts, shifter, etc). Shoot me a PM if you're interested, it's all in excellent condition. I also have a 2.5" exhaust with a nice SS Cattman muffler on the car that will be coming off soon for a 3" setup, so I'll be putting that up for sale as well.

No Luck recently

Still looking for a fender and a spoiler. The junkyards seem bare nowadays. I think the end is nigh for finding A32 I30's at the yards

Solved P0440 and P0446

I was reading some posts on the 4th gen forum about these particular CELs and I tried some of the solutions I was reading there and I seemed to have fixed the issue finally. Last March I got the CEL P0447 which was a PAIN to pinpoint. It turned out to be the EVAP valve assembly on the top of the intake plenum. That was my first issue. This soon evolved into the next two issues.

I replaced the canister, my old one was sending trash threw the lines and causing issues. I blew all the hoses out and cleaned all the parts that involved the EVAP system. This included freeing plungers and lubricating them (more on that in a bit.) This solved the issue of charcoal in the lines.

However I kept getting P0440 and P0446, I knew that was the little black solenoid that was on the canister so I went to the yard and bought one swapped it in it fixed it for a bit but it soon came back. So i bought another and the same thing. This was incredibly frustrating and I then decided to clean and lubricate the part and it fixed the darn thing. Spraying PB blaster and moving the plunger back and forth with a pick freed the thing up. And as of now it seems to be functioning.

Now the whole system in cleaned and lubricated so I should be good fingers crossed. Now that this issue is fixed I can continue to move forward and do more work on the car.

This is the part that was causing me all my headache.

Oh my dirt!

So I have been having water intrusion for years on the drivers side A pillar and floor. So today I pulled the mud flaps off and pulled back the fender liners and there was loads of mud and leaves in there. It was caked up all the way up the finder. Water was having a hard time escaping obviously. Cleaned it all out and put the flaps back( now they can actually do their job. When I put them on last year a neglected cleaning it out beforehand.

I still might need to pull the headliner and clean the sunroof drain tubes, but we will see. I also put some silica granules inside to wick the moisture out of the cabin.

my passenger side fender is completely rotten where all that dirt was. The trapped water just ate through the fender.

This was just the first scoop. I pulled out piles on both sides.

Yeah, I try to clean that area out once a year to prevent rust from ruining things. I ground the inside lower portion of my fenders clean and then applied a few coats of POR15 to hopefully prevent any further damage. I'm not sure if yours can be saved though.

I hope you fixed the leak into the cabin, but I have a feeling you didn't. See my build thread for info on a possible location for the water intrusion.

Yeah my right fender is completely trashed. Still looking for a replacement. I do assume I have more digging to do to completely solve the water issue. The Pacific NW is going to get more rain for sure so we will see.

Sunroof Drain Tubes

Pulled the Headliner today and found that the drain hoses were not attached to the nipples. Bought some clamps for the front and rear hoses and secured them. Unfortunately the A pillars and C pillars completely shattered while prying the clips out.

Sucks about the A/C pillars. I've figured out how to remove A pillars without breaking them, but the C pillars are pretty much impossible.

Glad you found out where it was leaking from and you were able to fix it. Sucks that the A/C pillars broke in the process.

Found A,B,C Pillars

Went to Pick N Pull today and grabbed all the pillar moldings in beige, Luckily they came off in one piece. The C pillars are plastic ones, decided to switch out the cloth covered ones. I tried to get the cloth ones but they are so brittle that they always shatter. The car at the yard had a shattered rear window so it was very easy to pull the moldings. Also picked up the sun visor hook holders as well, mine were broken and would not stay in.

Hey, I'm not sure if you're still looking to convert to a 5 speed, but I just put up two 5 speeds for sale (I converted a a 6 speed) and 90% of the parts needed to do the auto to manual conversion. Let me know if you're interested.

Washer Fluid Indicator Light...

So I swapped out the dang washer tank for one with a fluid indicator. Wire and plug are already there. it is nice to see an indicator light for this, but it is not worth the hour I struggled getting the stupid top bolt out. It would not turn.

I was already in there today replacing my dang fender, I will post about that, but I am frustrated as you will soon see.

Oh and I have a massive oil leak I need to address, I guess 200k will do that.

My moment of victory dashed by the pesky CEL with Evap codes I cant pin down

Finally found one!

Stopped by the yard today and they had a green I30... I proceeded to grab the 4 mudflaps. Now I have a complete matching set! However the big score of the trip was a trunk lid with the spoiler. IN GREEN. After 6 years of looking for an undamaged trunk and spoiler I finally found one and best part is I had a 20 dollar certificate so it only cost me about 30 bucks all together.

I love the look of the spoiler on these cars it just completes the look... I will take pictures when it is installed.

Installed the 96 I30t trunk, now I finally have the spoiler. I love the look. I had to switch the latch out with my old trunk because the popper latch didn't work, looks like the 96 latch is slightly different but different enough not to work. Switched the locks and now it works beautifully.

Makes the car look so sleek. Love how it hangs over the deck lid. Also my almost ready to be sold 98 GXE hiding in the back

The paint is rough but I can fix that

I had to go back to the yard and grab another spoiler brake light. Popped it in and now I have all the lights working.

Picked up some things

Been slowly working on getting this car fixed up, and I went to the yard today and found a few items I needed.

Picked up the 4 door seals, they were in perfect shape, got them for 50% off as well.

Picket up a new license plate mount, I also picket up a factory Infiniti plate frame from the car I got the spoiler from a few months back.

Grabbed another set of EVAP valves and solenoids. I really want to end this issue, along with that I snagged a mint Nissan gas cap.

But the BIG thing was a working door harness, I finally found one that was not butchered by someone else at the yard. This fixed my intermittent switch issues and finally fixed the door light. All this is cosmetic but I am glad to finally get one more thing working.

My next trip I want to try to get those seats. they are beige leather heated seats in decent shape. I can repair the small issues. My current driver seat is a mess and is shedding its foam now. I would love to trash it. These are GLE seats so they are closets to the I30 seats.

Also my car hit 200,000 miles a few weeks ago, I made it without any major failures, just regular oil changes and stuff.

I want to rip out my dash and replace the wiring harness. As I posted before the previous owner cut up some of the wiring to add a USB port. Everytime I use the lighter it blows fuses. And I cut the heated mirror rely wire by mistake. Its an annoying job but I want to fix these things,

I also need to restore my steering wheel the leather wrap is pealing.

I am going to talk with some body shops to repair my rocker and the fender mount that rusted out. Not sure how much this is going to cost.

That is all for this update,

Cheers

So, there is a 5spd at the yard today. Its not an i30 transmission so it doesnt not have VLSD, However, I am going to grab the clutch and break pedal and everything I need to do the swap. I am going to grab the trans as well. It may need some work but we shall see.

That seems a bit extreme. Why not repair the individual wires?

Got the 5spd...

A friend and I pulled the 5spd out of the 97 Maxima at the yard. It was a huge pain to get that off, but it is done. Grabbed the shifter and linkages as well. I still need to get the pedals and other stuff. I pulled the drivers axle as it looked good.

Looks good. Did you complete the manual swap?

Not yet I have most of the parts. I am still looking for the pedals. That is holding me back

Update November 2022

It has been a while well I have some updates.

Transmission has been put on hold, I just dont have time to swap it right now. I have most of the parts to do it.

I swapped white gauges in from a Maxima SE; they look fantastic. However the PCB section of the cluster was faulty. It killed cruise control. It gave me a couple of CEL's so I just swapped the white gauges into my cluster and all the issues when away. The millage on the junkyard cluster matched my millage closely so I dont mind the difference ( only about 1800 miles).

I found a Max with 70k at the yard. It is mint so I grabbed some things off it:

All 6 OEM coils
EVAP equipment
MAF
Hoses
Door seals

I need to do brakes and struts. My Brake light comes on once and a while.

Spoiler leaks, but I need to pull it off to paint it

Rear valve cover is starting to leak, about time I guess

That is all for now,

Alex
