Necessary components for ZX caliper upgrade/Discussion

I just wanted to start a thread in general about ZX calipers because I have been getting a lot of PM's about my set-up and there is a ton of misinformation out there about the calipers in general. So post your set-up and what you like/dislike about them. Favorite pads? Favorite rotors? Best paint to use? Every tip/trick is appreciated and will help future owners who don't have the money for a Brembo kit or other high dollar kit.

Mine:
1996 ZX TT 30mm Iron, no bracket
Akebono slotted rotors milled 3mm
Akebono pads
no hardware kit (yet will use next pad change)

NOT SIMPLY A PICTURE THREAD SO DONT POST A MILLION PICTURES

First topic, Some say you need this http://www.courtesyparts.com/41080k-...2_883_982_983& to do a proper pad change on ZX calipers. I personally do not have it on mine and it is far from noisy. Who has it? Like or dislike

Ok got question. I got a new hardware(shim) kit for my Zx calipers. My question has to do with the solid metal, not the vented, shim. There are 2 different sets, the early calipers came with shims that look like this:

and the later calipers came with shims that look like this:

I know Nissan didnt just change the shim shape for kicks. Does anybody have an idea of why? I cant think of any reason other than the pads for the later year Zx calipers are different shape so they had to change the shape of the shim. Help if you can, I know it is kind of specific but hopefully somebody knows.

From what i understand the shims are different between the alum and iron units because of piston size
