cattman y-pipe welds
can someone take a look at these welds? I'm not a pro at this stuff, so i'm unable to tell what is good/decent/bad work.

It looks alright, nothing special. Just a standard weld Whoever did it was kind of cheap, they could of went over it again, it looks a little lite/thin in spots, like if a piece of weld ever chipped off it would leak.

well the weld between the 2 pipes looks good, but the hanger looks very unprofessional. i'm sure you wont have any problems with the strength of the weld but in general that weld doesn't look very healthy. i could do a much better job in 2 minutes

For the hanger, MIG welding was used...The weld to join the two pipes, is TIG. Both welds look good to me.

it may not be the prettiest, but it's not going to come apart. my welding skills aren't anywhere near that, and I have yet to have a problem with any of my stuff coming apart.
but yeah, the hanger was done with standard MIG welding. I can't tell if the pipes were done with MIG or TIG, but they look good. VERY nice if they were MIG, but average for TIG. in any case, they're not coming off and that's the important part.

it's hard to explain unless you've seen welding done and are familiar with the machinery, but here goes..
basically, MIG welding uses a steel filler wire fed through the gun, while it blows a shielding gas (usually a mix of CO2 and argon) over the welding area to keep oxygen out and the joint from oxidizing from heat. the electric current is sent through the welder to the wire being fed out the end of the gun.
TIG welding is similar to soldering....
is uses a gun with a tungsten electrode on the end, and similar gasses flowing through the tip of the gun into the joint. the electric current flows through the gun and the tungsten electrode arcs against the metal (producing enough heat to melt the metal in that area). The electrode simply heats the metal and you use filler rods to hand-feed the metal you need into the joint. some seams don't even need filler metal (butt welds can sometimes be done without it). very similar to soldering in the aspect that you use one hand to control the gun (soldering iron), and another hand to feed the filler rod (solder) into the heated joint.
