Actually my '96 auto didn't really have that much of a race either. Me and my friends found a nice racing spot between some warehouses on the south side of Chicago. 2 Saturdays ago we went to race and to test out how the y-pipe was performing.
RACE 1:
SI vs. '96 V8 cougar(205hp, 280tq)= cougar wins
RACE 2:
SI vs me= ME wins
Race 3:
Cougar vs me= me wins
The guy in the cougar spins like a madman when I pull away. Even after I told him how to torque brake I still take him...

I like the back of the Si, but the front is takin some gettin use to. How's the shifting? Seems uncomfortable.

Why would it be uncomfortable...
The shifter's only a couple inches from the steering wheel...
You barely have to move your hand to shift...
That is a GOOD thing, trust me...
Why would you want to reach all the way down by your knee...
Once you drive w/ a "rally style" shifter you'll wonder how you lived without it...

i recall an article in SCC about the civic SI. BAsically, they said they would change the entire suspension, and put in the RSX engine and tranny! I liked the older civic SIs, the new one looks like a small minivan..

The prior gen SI definitely is more stylish. The new one looks like an igloo
