Maxima.org FAQ
The vast majority of inquiries we get (over 95%, believe it or not) through the Contact Us form, PMs sent to administrators, threads posted in Site Suggestions & Feedback, etc. are answered here.

Table of Contents

I just registered and I can't post new threads!

In order to combat spammers, we require that you post 15 replies to other peoples' threads before you start your own. Replies that are no-content or otherwise spammy will be deleted and will not count against the 15.

I can't post replies OR threads.

When you register your account or change your e-mail address, you're sent a confirmation e-mail. You will need to follow the instructions in this e-mail before you will be allowed to post. If you lost the email, click here to request it again. If you still don't get it, check your spam folder.

I don't like the 15-post rule!

Occasionally someone writes us saying that they just want to post a thread to ask a single question, and they don't "get" the 15-post rule. Please try to understand something - there are a lot of members here who are happy to help others with advice, but none of them are paid to do so. They aren't on anyone's payroll; they do what they do because they like this community. We feel that making a little effort to participate in the community is not too much to ask, in return for the benefits you stand to receive. The rule also helps us to keep out spammers, which is of obvious importance - and no, we won't waive this requirement, even if you promise you aren't a spammer.

I can't search the forums or upload an avatar!

This is currently restricted to paid memberships only. See this thread for info on how to search Maxima.org using Google and other search engines.

I clicked a thread link, but it either went to the wrong thread or I got a message that the thread doesn't exist.

Please see the old thread lookup tool. If the tool doesn't work, the thread is gone, sorry.

I tried to go to a thread but it told me I don't have permission to access it.

Most likely, that is exactly what has happened. Threads may be moved to a mods-only forum for review if they break the rules or get out of control. There is also a possibility it's an old thread - see the above entry.

I have some issue that isn't covered here.

Check the Announcements and Feedback & Suggestions forums. There may already be a thread there about it. If it's something that effects just your account, or you are new & have not met the 15-post criteria yet, contact an administrator (other than "Administrator", an account which is only used for maintenance) via private message. If it's something that isn't specific to your account, you can start a thread in Feedback & Suggestions.
