Bought a 5.5 gen!!!

Some of you may know i sold my 95 and bought a civic, the i saw this thing and went to see it. turned out he wanted to get into a civic lol so i traded my civic and added 1500 to get this:
Name: maxima_zpsad3a1830.jpg
Views: 79
Size: 96.8 KB

2003 titanium edition 6spd, all options work, leather is mint. the guy selling it had no idea about the car but it has a few nice mods.

-obx v2 headers w/ o2 sim
-2.5" exhaust, straight pipe no cats into a 2000-2001 muffler
-tokico illumina with tein s-tech
-blehmco stage 2 lower tie bar (trimmed to fit header)
-front strut bar
-some sort of rear anti roll bar

Thats the good. the bad is the fogs don't work, i need an alignment sometime this year and worst of all but expected: it burns oil. First of all he told me it does when i asked. he said he did an oil change at 236k km and when i changed it (at 239k km) the dipstick read like 80% full. can't really go on this info since i don't know how much was filled... those quick lube places don't end up draining all of it and i don't think they fill up to the H line.

So i drained the oil overnight. i did that because the filter was on so tight and i had to wait till the morning to get a filter wrench to get it off. the car was jacked up near the front so ALL of the oil drained oil over night. today i ended up putting in 4L, maybe 4.1. the dipstick reads right at the H and i will check level every 1000km.

the other reason why i suspect it burns oil is that occasionally after decelerating in gear (at low rpm), when i come to a stop (idle) i get a puff of smoke out the back with a whiff of unburnt fumes mixed with a bit of oil...PCV? i guess having a straight pipe you can tell the smallest amount of oil being burnt vs having a cat, again not sure how bad it is but i get no oil looking cloud under throttle, just a bit of dark unburnt fumes

Anyways i'll monitor it and we'll see. if its considerable i'll start with the regular remedies like 04+ valve cover (is it front or rear people replace?) and a catch can, luckily i have no precats already.
Not too too worried since this will be a 3 season car and i will buy another civic as a beater/DD when the max is in the garage or hibernating in the winter.

after i monitor a full oil change interval i'll see how bad it is and then start modding the exhaust... i want to put in a cat (cause i don't wanna get stuck driving in front of a cop and get pulled over), a large resonator and replace the muffler with one that gives some sound. the muffler is doing a decent job. however, since its the only volume killer it sounds silly trying so hard to muffle all the noise and rasp all by itself without the help of a resonator at least lol

All in all i'm happy with it

That car is pure gold! If oil is the only issue, you'll be good.

He screwed himself on the trade, imo LOL

The rings are fine. It sounds like my old motor. The valve stem seals are shot, but who cares (engine braking sucks the oil through). I bet compression is good. Just check the oil once a week. Now, you can do long OCIs lol

Don't put on a worthless cat, ugh. Why would a cop give two ****s?

ya i read up on the valve stem seals oh well. i collect change, starting a new fund after i buy the civic in change lol... i should have enough by next year to pay for an new vq35 and labour if it blows.

the cat isn't only for the opps but also for me! with the window down the fumes come in and my clothes end up smelling like i was on a motorcycle

yup hlsd. gotta say i like how it reacts quicker than vlsd in my '95. guess the gear driven lsd is more instantaneous than a fluid?

lol isn't that better? i think if it was blowing smoke its burning faster than not seeing it burn no?

ok so driving it a bit i realized i'm not a fan of drive by wire... it acts the same as my friends g35 :/ i just skimmed past the 7g section and they're talking about this weapon-r i throttle where it changes the responsiveness of throttle. they also mentioned sprint booster which i looked up and is $300 and the WR is $200... fits a altima 3.5 but not confirmed if it fits a maxima.

also i was on technosquares website and looking at their reflash ecu for a vq35 (not sure whats true/up to date since their website is awful)... but is this true about the drive by wire throttle closing up to 20% near redline? http://www.technosquareinc.com/maxima.htm

thanks for the tip. i know sprint booster's been done already i was asking has anyone fit the weapon-r i throttle since its cheaper and does the same thing.

also do you know if that thing about the throttle closing up to 20% near redline true? this is what technosquare is sayin:

"Drive By Wire Adjustment
Throught our testing we found, the drive by wire system was program to never fully open (throttle flap) when you smash the accelerator pedal. In fact, it actually closes the closer you get to the rev limiter, by as much as 20%. This restricts air into the motor and causes HP and Torque numbers to go down. We have remapped this setup so when you go wide open throttle, the throttle flap fully opens and STAYS OPEN, increasing HP and Torque.
"

heard of it but haven't read anything on it or done any research. i wanna change my spark plugs, maybe spacers. i think i'll do a vias bop first and wait for some used spacers to pop up. right now i'm looking for a used wbo2 cause i have a cheap vafc1 lined up. header-back exhaust and no tune, i must be missing quite a bit of ponies and wasting too much gas at wot!

i found out today is that my mileage is horrible. i'm at half tank and cresting 230km, which mean just under 500km on a 70L tank. shifting at 2k rpm, cruising in 6th gear at 1200 rpm and the best mileage i could get on the reader is 11.5L/100km. read into it and i figure its the knock sensor since it doesn't throw a CEL. i know its straight piped but the damn thing smells like its pouring gas out the tailpipe! i'll check with a code reader tomorrow morning, hope i'm right.

i found out another thing... pretty sure i have a 6g bbk or something not stock on the front cause the caliper is so damn close to the wheel and the slotted rotor is almost as big as the inside of the wheel. i'll take pics but i'm pretty sure rotors are a lil warped though lol.

as for the exhaust mod i planned scrapping that idea. as gay as the stock muffler sounds i love how quiet it can be... so i'll be looking into a electric cut out so i can have best of both worlds.

5.5 Gen

Replaced PCV valve and install PCV oil catcher I recommend ADD W1 oil catch can
http://www.ebay.com/itm/ADD-W1-Black-Baffled-Universal-Aluminum-Oil-Catch-Tank-Can-Reservoir-Tank-Ver-1-/200978358367?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item2ecb3e605f&vxp=
Use Castrol GTX oil 5/30W or 10/30W (summer)
Use Mobil one oil filter M105 (best) M108

Install NWP VIAS block plate http://www.nwpengineering.com/
Replace rear valve cover gasket and seal
Replace all spark plugs
Replace Ignition coil 1,3, 5 with Genuine OEM parts
Ignition coil 2,4,6 replace it or reused the old ignition coil since its accessible compare to rear valve cover (needs upper intake manifold removal)

Install phenolic intake manifold spacer 5 kits
Good luck!

I thought that those brakes wont fit with the stock wheels. But I could be wrong.

Jumpy Tach

Think I checked this car out and passed on it ...

Does it have a jumpy tachometer (does not rise smoothly but in big increments?)

The crappy mileage may have something to do with the O2 emulators where the sensors should be. Computer will not be getting all the info it needs to trim the air/fuel properly. You are most likely running pretty rich.

Just a thought.

Nice find and good looking Max.

I have had a burner for close to 5 years and I use a quick lube shop because they do free top offs in between oil changes. I do an oil change every 3k miles with full synthetic and top it off once a month for free( I burn about a quart or half every month depending how I drive, it can be a hassle but in the long run, it's only 20 minutes a month). Under aggressive driving I get a small amount of white smoke from under the hood from time to time; it's just the oil burning on the block. Kepp it monitored and you're on your way to 5.5 glory

Common issue. I believe it's due to the crank sensor.
