Sunroof Wind Visor + scratches...

I have looked around and gotten mixed signs about this so I figured I would start a poll. I'm want to remove the Wind Visor on my sunroof. My cars build date is June 01. (Why build an 01 when the 02's were already in production is beyond me). But anyways, this means that this thing has been for almost 6 years.

I have read people saying there were scratches while others say there were none. Or some, but easily removed. What was your experience with this?

I said a month ago I would not think of doing this. But, this weekend really made me think about it.

mine had scratches that are still there. They have diminished considerably over time though, and i don't regret doing it.

Yank it off, see what you can do, and put it back on if you hate it. I personally like a small scratch over that big huge-ace piece of plastic on my ride though. hth

But how is it riding w/ the sunroof open and no air-deflector since that is why its there in the first place?
Mine has many stress cracks from the cold and sheet, and its $80 for a new one.

i have scratches but you can only see them if you look right at them.
the scratches are better than having the visor on.

and FYI, its a sunroof WIND deflector not a noise deflector. with it off, there is a little more wind but the noise is considerably less. the wind deflecting increases noise.

haha Wind/Air does that really bother you That much. And no one in this post called it a noise deflector

I think I'll just take it off. And as previously said, if ya don't like it it can be re-installed.

I'll prob take it off tonight. My mind is pretty much made up. Not only does it make the car look uglier. But it also looks old and faded.
I almost washed my car this weekend but got busy. Looking UNDER the deflector. It's hard to clear under there.

Keep the comments going and I will also take pics today after I remove it. Show the damage if any.

I took mine off. A bunch of scratches underneath, I even wet sanded the area but no dice.

It doesn't look horribly bad unless you know where to look. I would agree that the car looks better without it. It is quieter too.

Took mine off after I had the car for a month. I bought mine used so it obviously did its damage. Scratches around my sunroof but I'd rather have those and try to fix them than have the deflector. Still unfixed, but deflector removed.

Here are the results... I have some cosmetic questions for you guys in regards to how to get some of this stuff OFF. Apparently, the corners is where the damage occurred, nothing I cannot live with though.
The ring, do I have to use anything special to get that stuff of and the tape used to protect the paint from the metal brackets... Any ideas. THANKS

RMD,
You can try to clean it off and try to wax it. See if that works. I found out too late that when I purchased the car, I should have taken it off. Now it looks just like yours. I just keep mine on and call it a day.

Hey rmd0311....This was the first thing I did to my car two years ago when I got the pearl max...The black ring and minor scratches it left was not to hard to take care of...I first used turtle wax bug and tar remover to take off the "ring" then meguiars scratch x to remove some of the scratches...Like most people said the scratches are still there but you have to really look for them to notice..I also took off the clear tape on the corners with a hair dryer/heat gun and some goo gone....No residue left...It was a pain in the a$$ to clean around with the visor on plus the car looks so much better with it off...Just use some elbow grease and buffer to wax after cleaning...Good luck...Paul

I agree with paulpearl. The Turtle Wax bug & tar remover works good. I used it when I took the emblems off the decklid and will certainly use it when I get around to taking the air deflector off. I'm sure any respectable brand of scratch remover or buffing compound will work for additional imperfections.

Will the BUG and TAR remover also assist with the tape? Any ideas on how to take that off? I was thinking about hitting it lightly with a blow dryer.

Yo, heat (heat gun or hair dryer) works best for the excess glue and/or tape left behind from emblems, moldings, air deflector, etc..

The scratches were very bad on mine. A couple down to the bare metal. I did some touch up paint and put it back.

Good luck removing all the scratches. Follow the advice given by others and just use good ole elbow grease. They will still be there but only noticable to the "trained" eye. Noone else will ever know.

Maybe mines where different. But at least 4 of the scratches where REAL deep. All cars are different though. I will have to live it with the visor. Next time, I will remove IMMEDIATELY.

Use some Goo Be Gone and it should help.

I took mine off and there was scratches but I buffed it out the best I could and left the deflector off. The scratches are still there and somewhat noticeable but I really don't care since the car looks much better without the deflector and my paint is ****ty anyways....

I just removed mine a few minutes ago and it does have a couple scratches but anything is better then a reflector with a couple of cracks in it.

Also when using the goo gone on the tape it makes life a hell of a lot easier if you use your finger nail lightly on the tape to remove it instead of trying to take it off with a cloth!

I have thought about removing mine, but i worry about how bad the scratches would be. For me its just easier to leave it on there for now.

Just take it off and clean under it at least., then you can put it back on if you think it's unbearable. After you see what that rubber does to your car you won't want to put it back on.

use the nail polish remover with some rubbing alcohol mix them both make sure not to scrap over and over you might take the paint off. i had the same situation after removing the wind visor and the nail polish remover with little alcohol cleaned all those left over spots. now it looks like my car didnt even come with wind visor. i will take the pictures and post the result that i had after cleaning.

OC guy you can still see the damage left ... but it isnt as noticeable bc you have white paint.
I took off my visor.... definitely scratches, but it looks better and wont cause problems later, rusting etc. I left it off, Ill live with the scratches/ attempt again to remove them.
--Id be careful with nail polish remover
