After who knows how many years being in storage I pulled my Stillen kit out. So far I got the rears and front cleaned, prepped and painted.
Hand sanding the crap old paint was a bit of a chore. The front lip has so many curves. I used various sized sockets to help sand the concave areas.
I had color matched paint made up at NAPA. Costs about $27 for an aerosol can. I used adhesion promoter primer first, a zillion coats of paint, then lots of clear.
No great pics yet. I'll be letting them dry more before I mess with them too much. I'm not sure if I will wet sand the orange peel out or not.
I'd say the whole job will take 4 cans of color. Woof! Look at that **** poor job I did.
Looking much better! Can't wait for the full set to be put on. Also how old are your clear turn signals? I installed mine roughly 4-5 years ago and they're not super white anymore, they faded a bit over time.

These came off a 97 I parted out. I'd guess they are from the early 2000's. My lights are far from perfect, they have 160k miles and are a bit yellow and hazy. I have a brand new set of clear bumper lights and they looked way out of place.
So JS..... I haz a HUGE jealousy about two things....
First, that GARAGE! All that space and brightness! HUGE KUDOS!
And second... That beautiful specimen of an SE-L. You've transformed it to way better than when it left the dealer. Just BEAUTIFUL (and almost old enough to drink, LOL)
You have to admit the Sterling Mist, when in that condition, really brings a classy dimensional look! BRAVO!
Maybe this can help... You probably already know there are plain primers and also self leveling primers that fill minor differences so sanding gets to perfectly smooth much easier (most of the time)
nice job dude !! looking great !!, u get over spray on anything u didnt want?? and u said a zillion coats, but for real like 5 coats? and the 6 cans u have for color (guessing by elimination) are they for the remaining pieces as well?

I've been lucky to always have a garage to work in. First was my parents two car, then a one car at an apartment. This is a two car with a second floor attached to my house. First thing I did was install as many lights and outlets a possible.
I've said it before, I can't take all the credit. The original owner was very good to it.
I'll admit, I cut corners with the prep and painting. I could have made it perfect but my car isn't so a few imperfections aren't a big deal.

I'm painting on the second floor of my garage. I have two fans in the window only a few feet away. It's not making too much mess. I paint up here all the time. I lost count on coats. I'm going by what I see. At least 5, probably more on the front as it sees more road debris.
I bought one can for some work I did last year. I bought two more for painting the kit. I realized after doing the rears that it was not going to be nearly enough to do all the parts. I bought three more. I have the side skirts to do right now. I have 2 and a half cans left.
A bit of everything, some sanding marks showing, one can started sputtering and dripping. I should have stopped there but I tried to hide it. Then I cleared over it but the last coat was not fat and wet enough. It looked alright aside from the orange peel. I'll come back to it this weekend hopefully.
Anyone following Dom_dub on Instagram? He's doing a replica rebuild of Vince's blue maxima from the first fast and furious right now. The actual Hero Maxima sold not too long ago for $35k from a Museum that sat for years.
I think he just finished doing the Jetta replica rebuild and is now doing the Maxima. He's going to be posting videos of the process on his channel.
Do people think it's iconic like say the Batmobile or BTTF DeLorean? I never thought of those movies becoming classics.
Maybe the replica car(s) go to car shows and raise money for charity. I have friends who are really into Ghost Busters. They replicate all sorts of propsx car included of course, and do public and private events to raise money.
Well, I'm sure that building replica's from the first fast and furious is all for paul being how popular it became and is still going after nearly 2 decades. I'm sure the 90's Japanese are going to be the next classics, whereas before it was all about muscle cars and yes the replica's could be used to raise money.
I tried to do things in the correct order. Maintenance and stuff to pass inspection were on top of the list. I swapped over a few easy items from my 98 in the first few days. Soon after I dove into rust repair and maintenance. Then I made improvements in all areas of the car (except the exhaust aside from a SS tip, I hate exhaust work!).
I might have to make a members ride thread just to remind myself all the work I've done. The past year and a half went quickly.
