Another Auto vs 5speed question (please dont flame)

Sorry for this guys I just need your opinion on what to do or more like advise, I am 95% ready for a 5speed swap but am in the midle of this decision, I lobe the comfort of the auto and I know if I get an VLSD auto is gon be a lot better but also I love the pick up of the speed and well this is my 1st auto car I've ever owned so idk what to do!! This is my daily driver and I get traffic once in a while, SO what ya'll think!?! Thanx in advance...

Milo.

do you want to row gears in traffic or not?

Also, the 5 speed in the 4th gens tends to have a bad input shaft which causes issues...the autos are more reliable.

I drive my speed in NYC traffic, and as much as I love 5MTs, NYC traffic still kills me. 5 mph for 1.5 hours can rally sap the life out of you, auto or stick. At least with auto the tranny is doing some of the work for you.

i personally have never been bothered by manual trans in traffic, but maybe i'm an exception.

as maximas get older, you have to worry about trans problems more and more. if the trans is in good shape and shimmed properly it will last a long time. if not, you might have to get it fixed in short order. a well driven 5spd is usually faster than an auto is.

For convenience stay with auto: 1 hand on wheel, 1 hand free for other things: burger/phone/coffee/makeup-if-u-r-girl.

5spd: constantly aware of current speed and gear. Need to learn and build downshift instinct, or else during close-call/emergency, you may find you attempting to maneuver the car out of danger in top gear (i.e. extremely slow).

I would stay auto. Although I do hate the lousy upshift / downshift between 40-50.

i wanted a fully loaded maxima with a manual so thats what i got lol i like driving it but when it brakes its not like finding another 4spd auto no problem at the yard... i have 3rd gear crunch now if i shift from second at redline

i'm pretty sure the 4spd also offers lsd

Even worse is the automatic stubbornly staying in third when you slow down to a creep. That makes taking off again a real drag.

Good call on staying auto.

I have a 5spd and, for me, it has rarely ever bothered me. Even when I had the jwt clutch.

The ability to have full control over the car's power at all times far outweighs the advantages of the auto to me.

I think you left out the most important reason for having a hand free . . .

5spd: constantly aware of current speed and gear. Need to learn and build downshift instinct, or else during close-call/emergency, you may find you attempting to maneuver the car out of danger in top gear (i.e. extremely slow).
In other words, he would need to learn how to drive a stick.

Honestly, my car is second nature to me after having driven 220,000 miles.

There is no thinking about any of those things. I am confident that I can avoid trouble better in my 5spd than in my wife's auto.

I hope you're not encouraging him to multitask while driving. Distracted driving is such a danger whether it is an auto/manual.

Anyways I like 5speed because my entire focus is on the road versus having a free hand to do something lol. Plus it is fun shifting up and down the gears lol.

Your Tranny fluid is tired. Drop out the old fluid, measure it (like say you dropped 3.5 Qts), replace with the same amount of new Dexron III or equivalent fluid. Enjoy your much happier to downshift tranny.

Remember: DON'T FLUSH.

No flush because our cars are so old? And has anyone tried flushing? I know it drys up the internals and what not but jw

More like no-flush to any old car with an automatic tranny that may not have been maintained well. Too much a risk of blowing the whole tranny.

Drop-n-fill is the gentle way to bring some life back to older automatics.

Actually it not downshifting at a rolling stop is normal behavior in 4th gen AT. To get it into 1st you must come to a complete stop. Pretty annoying though.
