Today I got tired of trying to pass a mini game on Zelda and decided to trial fit my Napa Gold 1182 filter.

I had to remove some material with my Chraftsman angle die grinder. After removing some aluminum from above the pan rail gasket area it barely scrapes just enough to remove some paint from the can.



I then applied some of my daughters paint to the filter gasket and installed the filter. Sealing area looks great to me.







Luckily I was over full 1/2 a quart so removing and reinstalling the filter was not a big issue. All grinding was done with the small filter in place and then sprayed with brake cleaner and then air prior to removing the filter again. The car was not run with the 1182 filter, that will wait until the oil change in about 1.5K.

Acording to the guys at Bob in The Oil Guy, this filter will outflow a VQ by sometiing like 5X.

The minimal gain in size was not worth $12 for a paper filter. I decided to try this one.

Do you plan to run this filter for an extended interval to take advantage of the additional filtering media inside?

With the larger media and added oil capacity I will go from 3k to 5k.

I went ahead and changed the oil 641 miles early today. Startup was as quiet as any other startup after an oil change.

The reason for the larger filter is two-fold. Both reasons are related to the extra oil capacity.
1 I like the idea of using the whole 5qt jug rather than having extra oil take up space in my small garage.
2 I feel better about stretching the OCI to 5K+ with the extra .75qt.

As far as being a dead ringer, the bypass is 24 rather than 8-11, but with the larger media I believe the pressure differential will be close to the same.

Ok not so good news. Napa 1182 + 49* X 3000RPM = rattling.
Next I will try a 1347 with 8-11psi bypass.

OK, devil's advocate.

The engine rattles when the oil pump is spinning strongly at 3K rpms. Not a good sign. This would suggest that, if you downgrade to a smaller filter, one that is still bigger than OEM, and the rattle goes away, BUT, would you not remained concerned that oil is not getting as much oomph going through all those oil passages as the OEM filter for the very same reasons?

Yeah, no rattle, but still. Fact is, from your first experiment, the bigger filter is robbing pressure or flow or what have you.

Perhaps a beefier, faster pumping oil pump is in order as well. But then that gets real complicated I imagine.

The 24psi bypass valve is starving the engine for oil until warmed up and thinned out.

So you're saying that your revved your cold engine to 3K rpms and heard the rattling? What kind of oil are you using, dino or synthetic? 10W30?

Yes, at 49 degrees I waited till 3K to shift into third. I am running 5W30 Castrol GTX. This was never a problem with a stock type filter.
