ive always wanted a maxima ever since i was little i remember when i was 10 i saw one and asked my dad "what kind of car is that" he said "i dunno" then i walked around to the rear and saw that awesome maxima in chrome and i fell in love. then my friend bought one and modified it. i was sold.

I agree with the statements above as I regret ever selling my 4th gen. I'm currently looking to save to get back in. I've had a 4th & a 5th (actually drove a 1st gen in HS) and the simplicity of the interior of the 4th gen is what has me hooked. The exterior is pretty bland until it is modded and then you get what you see here - an awesome car with clean & simple lines & the interior is the exact same. I like the space in the interior, especially between the front seats and the dash (the passenger side in particular).

You know this is not the case anymore - BMW now pushes a turbocharged 4 cylinder in the place of their much loved inline 6 cylinder non-turbo engine. Boo to them. And there is this GDI (gasoline direct injection) taking over, with possibly unsolved problems along with the benefits. Thankfully Nissan still makes the VQ, without GDI, but it makes me wonder when they will abandon it or mutate it enough that it bears no resemblance to the original.

Nice thread, good read.....loved Maximas since about 93....and as they progressed, kept loving them but feel in love with the 5.5....had 3 so far, when in high school I had a Poster of the 2000 Maxima over my door Gray Lustre, which I owned on that color, Merlot 03 one, and now a 02 the one in my Sig, swapping another 3.5 from maybe a 08, since this one is a OB aka Oil Burner, but give it up **** NO......

My first was a 89se. Since I've had a 90, 97 and a 98. All were 5 speed se models and I can't decide which I loved more. They've all been great to me also maintanace wise and never begged me to stop when some dueshe in a neon needed a good whoopin.

My 4th gen was my first car and I babied it since day one. Sadly the day I went down to buy it a construction truck backed into it scratching the fender, driver door, and the wheel. I got $600 off the price though. Ever since I have slowly but surely, with no clear end goal in sight lol, modded and transformed it into the car I drive today. It is my DD and I love driving it every day because it gives me excitement and so much joy. The insurance where I live is dirt cheap as well as the tag fees. A car made in 1996 is not supposed to be able to outperform new cars with IMO simple mods. I just cant say enough about it. A funny story I heard this weekend, a guy I know flips cars and he sold a maxima that no lie had 100 oil changes all its life.....still going. What other car can handle that? That is why I drive a 4th gen

I am a newbee on this website. I am an older guy (58). I have worked on my own cars for 40 years now. I have owned my 1996 SE M/T for almost seven years. I drive it because it is one of the most dependable cars I have ever owned. Even at 176,000 miles it drives like a much newer car of a different make.

The Maxima has the room I want, it handles rather well, decent mileage, and it is paid for. It still looks similar to a lot of the newer cars of different makes. No need to be embarrased about driving a 17 year old car.

Ive always loved maximas ever since I first rode in one, it was a 2nd gen, I loved the way it sounded and rode! I had to get one and fell in love with it ever since then. ive had a 2nd gen, a 3rd gen as in my signature, and now currently own a 4th gen. Alot of people tell me that all I drive are maximas. There are not 2 many cars that you can hav sportiness, luxury and reliability all in the same package with 4 doors. Ive owned chevrolets and fords, but the maxima is and has been my favorite and most reliable.

Assuming that maxima was a 4th gen, what's so amazing about that? That's more oil changes than average.

If it was a 95 (17 years old) that drove the national average of 15k miles per year = 255k miles with oil changes every 3k miles = 85 oil changes.

But then again I'm assuming its a 4th gen. It could be older. If the car had like 350k+ miles then yeah that's amazing o.o

1st post here, if my radiator support is good I am buying a 99 SE in excellent condition w/ leather, bose, sunroof, remote start with 136k for 2500.00 today. My mother had 3 Maximas and have always loved them. I have a 2010 Nissan Frontier and it has been an excellent truck other than less than great gas milage.

Reason?
1.) Need winter car/commuter car.
2.) My other car is a 2012 Mustang GT brembo 3.73 with summer tires and I live in North Virginia

There's no doubt that these 4th gens are the most reliable cars on the planet. I just hit 338k and it still runs good. there's really no good reason to get rid of this car if you need transportation.

reliability besides electric issues which has finally cleared up now i hope the block itself perfect and one i love about the maxi/i30 s = underrated around here which im a happy person and stand out instead of blending in people call me out saying why not a bmw which is popular and hondas or whatever why not a g or z ill tell them maybe later on in life but the i30 the 4dsc is right for me

got very bored of the EG, it was easy to mod but i needed something with more space. so i started to build my maxima. Only found a couple of good maximas but they still have rust on em, but living in canada you will expect that. So bought a decent a32, restored(repaired,welded,undercoated) the chassis and it goes from there, i will only summer drive the car

Bought it yesterday. Heres a pic, drives excellent. Only issue is clock is dead and I am replacing rear strut/springs. Radiator support looks perfect.

  • Air Bag Diagnostics Box (Replaced for $100)
  • Re-grounded Front HID Light
  • Fixed Cruise Control (Parts for ~$2)
  • Replaced Transmission Fluid with Amsoil GL4 (~$70)
  • Fixed High Idle Issue
  • Replaced Windshield Washer Pump
• Quick Acceleration
• Quiet Motor

The List goes on! It's a great car to learn about cars with. It's my first car and I'm not afraid to work on simple to medium difficulty things. I still leave some things to mechanics though.

I drive my 97 Maxima for many reasons but honestly the reason I bought it four years ago was simple - I fell in lust at first sight and love at test drive.

It has classic styling, is just the right size inside and out, and has rear window visibility unlike newer cars - I hated that 2012 Malibu I had as a loaner earlier this year for this alone. It's decent on gas, has power when I need it, has been a very reliable daily driver, and call me shallow but I really really like the heated seats in winter.

All this Maxima love reminds me of the day after I got my GT-R. My friend called me up, could hear that I was driving and asked me how I liked it. I told him I don't know since I'm driving around in my Maxima. He replied, "WTF is wrong with you?"

Mainly I continue to maintain and drive this nearly 18-year-old car b/c I've babied it ever since buying it when my post-college '85 Accord ****box basically left me stranded on the way to work a decade ago.

From then until now, the car has transitioned into my family car and still has pretty much everything I need:

- reliable as all hell
- fits 2 kids and all the gear for most excursions/trips
- runs quiet but revs strong and has a subtle roar to let you know it means business
- still looks sleek and modern
- has barely a scratch on it, and the paint still looks great since I used to get it detailed every so often and now I wash/wax a few times a year
- fast enough to pull onto any highway safely and pass pretty much at will
- not too valuable where I worry about parking it on the street in the city
- tons of Maximas on the road in our generation and with web sites like this, it's easy to learn to maintain and do some repairs myself
- and last but not least, haven't had a car payment in 9 years, thus enabling buying a house in a decent part of the city and my wife not having to work while our kids are young and I commute by walking/biking

I've put to much time and money and tlc to give my max up that i have had since 2004
Most of all NO CAR PAYMENTS! lol although for sure im going to look into a 5th gen in 2013.
Forgot to mention very inexpensive to maintain.
