HVAC Temperature Adjustment Issue

Now that the weather is cooling down, I noticed that the temperature adjustment on the automatic climate control doesn't get warm until it hits 81-82F (27-28C). The air blowing out until the lower 80's feels like the lowest setting at 64F (18C) but it's hot at the max setting - basically there's no linear change as I adjust the temperature up or down, it's either hot or cool.

I've been having issues with the A/C not cooling enough not sure if this has anything to do with it.

Thoughts?

There is a procedure that will put the system into diagnostics mode. Search around on here for that. Make sure the output from all the sensors is correct and all the blend doors are operating correctly.

Is this it?

My car does this too, exactly as you described.

I looked over the forum link and then read in the FSM under the HA section for more details on the diagnostics test.

My results:

Ambient air sensor temp - 108 F
In vehicle sensor temp - 113 F
Intake sensor temp - 82 F

It's about 78 F out right now, so I think my intake sensor is working but the other two are kaput. Are these prone to failure? Is blowing out or cleaning them advised? I didn't see a normal range of resistance that the sensors are supposed to fall under...otherwise I would just check them with my multimeter.

Not trying to thread hijack btw, but since I'm having the same symptoms as the op maybe the resolutions are the same.

I found the temperature to resistance table in the FSM. Both faulty sensors were reading around 1.2 KOhms. I pulled out both sensors and cleaned them and now they are much closer to the intake sensor. Now I'm getting 85 F on the intake and around 90 on the other two.

After you do the climate control self test then try cleaning whichever sensors are reading incorrectly.

**EDIT

Alright it's quite sunny today so I ran diagnostics again. Code 25 disappeared likely because it wasn't sunny yesterday, but now I'm getting code 26, but it'll go away after a couple of flashes and no other errors are detected. If I cycle through the other steps and then go back to step 2 it'll show no errors without flashing 26. I ran across matty's thread when he had this problem and it didn't look like it was solved.

Also, any sugestions in unplugging the connector off the air mix motor? The tab faces down and I can't swing the ECU harness out of the way.

26 is related to the air mix door. If it flashes and goes away, maybe it's sticking a little. This definitely would cause a temperature difference between what you have displayed and what you feel. What temps did you get for test 5? I bet yours are off too. I didn't get any errors because the sensors were working but were very dirty.

I didn't note them. I'll have a go at it again tomorrow. How do you get the intake sensor temp?

I was throwing code 26 while working on the car but it's been clear of codes since then so I don't know what to think. Could the air mix door be obstructed or strictly a faulty auto amp?

Push the hot arrow until you get to mode 5 (51 on the display), push the defrost button to cycle through the sensor temp readings. http://www.nicoclub.com/FSM/maxima/1998/HA.pdf look at page HA-77.

Ohh that's right. It's for my I30 which has the earlier unit with less sensors, so I can't get an intake temperature reading. I remember getting something like 20.5c ambient and 26.5c in-car while working on the car yesterday.

Well it's been a couple of days and I dont' want to jinx things but the issue seems to have sorted itself out though I'm still curious what brought on the codes.

Anyways, I'm still pulling a code 52. Does that come up only when fault codes are stored?

Sometimes moving things around and cleaning them will solve your problems, your probably good 2 go.

Code 52 displayed without any other things lit up means "in good order". So, no problems there.

Sorry I meant code 52 with the 1 and 4 fan settings blinking twice each.

OK, so read the instructions to test it on the bottom of page HA-78 and if you need to do the diagnostic that starts on page HA-111.
