Odometer stopped working

Odometer stopped working
I have a 97 Maxima SE and suddenly my trip and regular odometer stopped working. Every once in a while it will count a few miles, but mostly it won't.
Have any of you experienced this? What can I do to get it working again?

Replace the speedometer/odometer, it's only $160 plus $20 mileage setup fee.
www.czp.us
it's not listed but email or call Coz to get the part.

i came online with the intent to start a thread about my odometer not working but it seems like lordaphex beet me to it .... anyway after going through the wiring schematics for the dash i see nothing that has to do with the odometer. they dont even mention the word odometer in the factory service manual ... (unless your a 98 or 99 owner.).. my best guess is to just replace the guage cluster

I, too, looked through a '98 service manual that is supposed to cover '95 through '99 (says so right on the first page), and all I saw was stuff about the digital odometer/tripometer. I haven't had a chance to look through a FSM from '95 yet (I will tomorrow, though). I already have a new gauge cluster on order, though, hopefully I won't have spent the money for nothing.

Funny, I have a 97 and have the same problem. Where did you guys order your odometers from? Did you have to get one that had similar mileage or something? Also, I have the SE with the whiteface guages - do I have to get lucky to find the same ones? Or can the faces be swapped?
Also, does anyone know what the sensor on the tranny is called / where it is located?
Gotta get smogged in a month or so and am worried that someone will notice!

pretty common it seems on gen 4 maxima's mine stopped reading at 40k when it got cold it would rattle off a few miles but that was it. I went through the local stealership and got a new speedo gauge set to my current mileage for 250 bucks in june of 06 and have not had any problems since. except my tach has decided to take a crap now.

Yeah, if I tap the shroud, the speedo comes back. If I go couple miles and it's still not working, I get a SES that I just reset.
In another thread, they mention taking the cluster out, tightening all the lil screws on the back side of the cluster. Seems like they weren't tightened from the factory. Worked for 6 months for me, but mine's acting up again.
Since the speedo sensor provides pulses, I thought about getting a low milaged cluster from ebay, and providing my own pulses to bring the odo up (I'm at 205k).

Have a related problem. I had a mechanic look at my SES light I am not positive which code came up right off the top of my head. He said it was the Vehicle Speed Sensor, so he changed it. 3 Days later the SES light comes back on. Double checked the speed sensor he said it was working fine. Reset SES light. A week later lights back on. After doing reserch he claims that the pulses come from the sensor to the instrument panel then back down to the sensor. He thought that the small screws on the back of the instrument panel was allowing the pulses to miss, so he tighten them, and we tried again. Another week then the SES light. So then I was told that we would have to get a new instrument cluster. My cluster is analog, and has always worked (all the gauges) Does anyone think we are on the right track? I hate seeing that SES light. Also I thought I had read a thread about some wire harness that Nissan had trouble with dealing with this, I believe that they even came out with a repair kit to fix these wires. Anybody remember this? Any suggestions would be appreciated.
