I use to have a 1.5" cut stock shifter and alumnium ball shift ****. After 2 years, I got tired of the notchiness and resistance to go into 2nd. The notchiness was not near as bad as the STS's I've had in the past, but annoying none the less. Last year while installing an STS on my friend's 98, I noticed that the 98 shift lever had an additional bend in it, as if Nissan was doing something to improve leverage. I managed to find a 99 shifter (same bend) and I installed it (uncut). With my shift **** adjusted for height, the overall shifter height is only .5" higher than it was with the cut shifter, but the shifting is buttery smooth. I can flick it into 2nd with so much more ease. I love it.

yeah that is why i always wondered what everybody was talking about as far as shifting being so difficult. The only thing of noticed is it being hard when it is cold

i cut mine about 2" on my 98 and i got this really cheap "momo" shift **** which is very very very light, and the shifts are sooo notchy i hate it! its definately shorter but notchy!

yea, when i cut my stock 99, it was different from Dave Sz 96, we were wondering why, i thought my shifter was just weird.. well now i know its normal

BUMP.....I called DaveB (the parts guy) and he couldn't find a different part number for the 98-99 shifter. Does anyone have more info on this?

exact same thing happened to me.my shifter is really low now, but gearing down into 2nd was like a fight....almost though it might be trans problem...but sounds natural i guess.

the shifters are the same. its the way the trany actualy shifts... or so ive experienced. ive got a 96 mt... and ive driven a 99 mt... only difference ive found is the clutch engagement... its much much lower on the 95 96... n as far as ive seen the shifters are the same for both cars... thats the only difference to my knowledge on the dif years

apparently they're not the same since the guy compared two side by side and they were different shapes.

there is no difference in the transmissions except for first gear so that theory doesn't hold any water.

clutch engagement is easily adjusted with the clutch engagement nut under the dash, you can make your clutch grab as high or as low as you want.
